My sewing room is half empty, as proven by the pictures below. And it's not just moving things from one room to another, I'm really throwing things away and putting non-sewing things in their proper places. Even the emotions of going through old memories is easier.
My fabric is going into several categories. Since I sew garments as well, I organize my fabric this way:
- quilt fabric
- fabric for Taylor
- fabric for me
- gigantic scraps to be used for special purposes (slopers, stitchouts, whatever)
- craft fabrics like furs and fleece
- fabric dedicated to a specific quilting project
- antique pieces
In terms of quantity, the quilting fabric takes up the most room, naturally, because I only buy clothing fabric for specific project (mostly). I'll check when it's all moved out, but I think the quilt fabric requires at least as much space as all the rest together.

I think you will have fun filling up the room in no time, lol!
Yes! I have started a bit on my sewing room, thanks to you! The closet is going to be my problem child. Right now it is so full of non-quilting stuff that I can't even walk into it. but I am going through stuff, like you, and enjoying the memories. I use plastic bins for my fabric and sort according to theme and also color. And then also keep individual projects in bins too. That way I can just pull out a bin and work on it. Will be posting on my antics soon. Keep up the good work!!
