Sewing Room Overhaul

The past few years have been hard on my organizational skills. However, things are getting back to normal and I'm going to add a table to my room.
This means major reorganization, clean out, and furniture rearrangement.
I'm already in the middle of moving almost everything out in order to bring in just what really needs to be here.
Before pictures? You'd like before pictures?
It's rather embarrassing, since it's such a mess, but here you go. It's not the original state, since I've been bagging things and grouping them together for a little while.
Each one of these messes was created by one tiny decision after another to "just put it here for now and take care of it later."

Gertrude Alice is all dressed up

After almost 2 years of promising myself I'd do this, it's finally done. The dust cover for my Bernina 440QE is finished.
She has the following features:
  • Her name embroidered on one side
  • My initial appliqued on the other
  • One-seam 3D flying geese comprise the rest of the design
  • The geese have had their edges turned down so it looks like they are curved
Even though there are many areas in which my execution or technique could be improved, I'm still as pleased as punch. The design was simple, the colors are exactly what I wanted, and I got a chance to really use my embroidery machine to make the decorative work.
I'm as pleased as punch.

Sewing Room mid October

Slow but steady progress. Furniture is all bought, most of it is built. Still trying to find the right lamps. I want compact fluorescent for the ceiling light in the center, and halogen along a couple of edges. Both the lights and the curtain rods need to be installed before I completely move back in.
Today I will get the machine moved from the old kid's desk to the new one. Things slowed down this weekend because I got sick, and just can't keep up with everything. Sneezing sneezing sneezing really gets in the way of progress.
Here are this weekend's pictures. See the white cabinets supporting the sewing desk? The one closest to the door has a hole in the back, intended for cables to come out. No cables for me, so I'm toying with ideas - do I cover it up? Decorate around it? Right now, I'm thinking about appliqueing a cat and a mouse, and using the hole as a mouse hole. Let's see, because I'm still trying to find the right pattern.
OK, back to the sneezing, hot tea, and TLC.

Thor the Renovation God Loses his Hammer

OK, so I've got the room planned. Tables, shelves, hardware, lamps, everything. I went to the Ikea website and found everything I needed. After checking the inventory at the nearest store, they didn't have all the pieces. So I checked the inventory at the next nearest store, and they have everything. I LOVE stores that give you an online inventory status and update it every 30 minutes. I was totally ready to buy everything on Friday night.

Enter Thor the Renovation God. He was not so thrilled by the idea of buying a bunch of stuff this weekend, believing that I would insist on adding all of the items to the Honey-Do list. After a heart-to-heart, he understood that the actual assembly could take more than a weekend. We also agreed that the curtain rods and light fixtures should be installed before the permanent furniture.
So we compromised - we'd buy everything, and I would only build up the one table I need to continue sewing. Also, I would not move my things back into the room until the curtain rods and lights are installed.
After a good night's sleep, my Kaufrausch (shopping fever) was over, and I proposed a more reasonable schedule for the installation. This more reasonable schedule would allow Thor the freedom to do it when he wants, rather than push to get a lot done soon.
When Thor got up this morning, he didn't feel any need to make big delays, and concluded that we should still go ahead and buy the stuff this weekend.
HOWEVER, it did finally occur to him that he had taken his Hammer (ok, hammer-drill) up to DD in Bochum, and had left it there. She's not coming here any time in the next month, and we're not going there either. That's a real problem, because without a hammer drill, we can't drill the necessary holes in the hardened concrete walls. Looks like we're going to have to come up with another solution.
